This isn’t the Pear Bowl section that won an award, that was last year’s.
WNPA awards
This year I received several awards in the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association Better Newspaper Contest.
But first an award that the entire staff won… The Leavenworth Echo took third place for General Excellence in our circulation bracket. It means that we put out exemplary newspapers during the year.
The awards that I won…
First place, Best Community Service Advertising, along with Carol, ad manager who pulled together all the info for the ad. “We are survivors” was a full page ad with photos and short bios of breast cancer survivors, information about breast cancer and display ads.
Second place, Best Special Section-Special Events/Festivals, along with the Echo and Record staffs. “Pear Bowl” is a section about the annual high school football game between Upper Valley rivals Leavenworth and Cashmere. The six-page broadsheet section included articles about the upcoming game and about each team. Lots of photos and stats were included in the section.
Third place, Best Special Section-Special Events/Festivals, along with the the Echo staff. “Christmas Lighting Festival” was a tab filled with info about the Christmas lighting festival, schedule of events and lots of photos.
Third place, Best Single ‘Special Promotion’ ad. “Happy New Year - Leavenworth Properties” was a simple little ad really, with a fun clip-art graphic.
Light through bamboo

The morning light illuminating the bamboo caught my eye this morning.
Oktoberfest tab cover
InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator
The logo art was submitted by the Oktoberfest people. The logo part is not my design.
I don’t care much for this cover, but I’m blogging it for completeness and to remind myself that it’s possible to do decent work even in the a horrid state of mind.
